Mental Health Matters: “Yoga – A Healing Mechanism for Overcoming Trauma.”

Support for migrants seeking asylum especially in Europe has traditionally focused on addressing their legal, housing, medical, language, and welfare needs. However, one critical area that often receives less attention is psychological support. The prevalence of mental health issues among this population, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD), and sleep disturbances, is alarmingly high. Many migrants also grapple with feelings of isolation, loneliness, low self-esteem, and even suicidal thoughts due to the stress and uncertainty of their circumstances.

Furthermore, the bureaucratic process of seeking asylum in Europe can be lengthy, leaving migrants in limbo for years without the ability to legally work or access stable living conditions. As a result, they often live below the poverty line, facing substandard accommodation and poor nutrition.

In light of these challenges, it’s crucial to empower refugees and asylum-seekers to lead more fulfilling lives by increasing their access to health-enhancing physical activities like Yoga. Our recent project emphasizes the importance of Mental Health wellness and how physical activities like Yoga can provide therapeutic care, educational services, and critical resources that create both immediate and lasting physical and mental health benefits for vulnerable populations; inclusive of asylum seekers who face the most trauma in trying to seek out refuge.

Our “Mental Health Matters” project upon completion will have an output guide which will take a thorough look at yoga practises and its benefits in enhancing physical amd mental well being in many aspects.

By understanding and promoting the profound benefits of health-enhancing physical activity like Yoga, through educational workshops, practical demonstrations, and hands-on experiences, our resolve is to empower more people to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines.

Also, by providing access to therapeutic care, including trauma-informed yoga, mindfulness practices, and outdoor recreational activities, we can alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD and overall mental wellness!
